Galatasaray remain hopeful of completing a deal for Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier this month.
English clubs had until 11pm last night to finalise any winter business – with the Magpies opting to keep their powder dry. Newcastle moved Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly on, with the latter completing a loan deal that will become permanent for £20million at the end of the season.
However, Turkish clubs have until February 11 to bolster their squads – meaning Trippier could still be sold. The 34-year-old has played a backseat role under Eddie Howe this season given Tino Livramento’s emergence at right-back.
He was the first player to take the leap of faith and join Newcastle under Saudi-backed ownership in January 2022. Howe welcomed an experienced operator that he knew from his time at Burnley, with Trippier instantly assuming on-field captaincy duties.
The former England international played a key role as the Magpies beat the drop before going on to achieve Champions League qualification the following year. Just five Premier League starts this season – and his age – has raised questions about Trippier’s future.
There was interest last January and after Euro 2024 but the defender committed to Newcastle. Galatasaray are now aiming to tempt the Magpies, with reports suggesting they are prepared to table a £4million bid.
Turkish outlets are reporting that Trippier is keen to explore the opportunity as one final career challenge. With no chance of signing a replacement, that would give Newcastle a dilemma heading into the final third of the campaign.
