Texas football signs No. 1 recruiting class, five months after Steve Sarkisian refused to flinch
With the early signing period for Division I football coming to an end on Friday, it is worth revisiting something head coach Steve Sarkisian said in July at the THSCA Convention in San Antonio.
At the time, Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns were in a bit of a recruiting rut, having been beaten to the finish line on a number of top targets. Those included five-star Duncanville wide receiver Dakorien Moore, who pledged to Oregon on July 4 after Texas was believed to be in the lead.
“I’m generally not one to panic in recruiting, especially in the middle of June and July,” Sarkisian said. “Let’s talk in December and see where we land.”
On Dec. 22, the vast majority of everyone’s recruiting for the 2025 cycle is complete, and Texas has the No. 1-rated class in the country, per multiple outlets.
The Longhorns went into the first day of the early signing period on Wednesday, commonly referred to as National Signing Day ranked No. 4 nationally, per the 247Sports Composite, but a commitment from four-star Alamo Heights ATH Michael Terry III pushed them to No. 1.
“We’re super-pumped about this recruiting class,” Sarkisian said Thursday on a conference call. “This is a very talented group of players that I think not only fit the physical characteristics of what we’re looking for by position in our program, but I think meet the character and are going to fit nicely into our culture.
“I think it’s a really versatile class with a variety of positions, highlighted by high-level players. As always, we really pride ourselves on recruiting the high school ranks. We think when we can get players in here young, then immerse them into our culture, into our offseason conditioning program, develop them as we go throughout their career, that’s when we really reap the benefits of having these guys in our program.”
Sarkisian indicated Thursday that 20 of his 24 high school signees will be early enrollees and will take part in spring practice in March, but he did not elaborate as to who will enroll early.
