Sunderland’s season-long loan signing of Amad Diallo was one of the deciding factors in the Black Cats’ promotion to the Championship play-offs last season.

The Ivorian had not made an immediate impact at Manchester United after joining from Atalanta in 2020, and after a season at Rangers the previous season, it was decided that Diallo should stay in England and experience the Championship.

It was possibly the best decision the Red Devils could have made, as Diallo’s goals in the absence of talisman Ross Stewart helped the Black Cats reach the top six of the Championship, only to lose in the play-off semi-finals to Luton Town.
