Miami Heat player Haywood Highsmith received a citation for careless driving after being involved in a car accident that resulted in critical injuries to a man. Highsmith was heading home from the Heat’s game against the Orlando Magic when he collided with a disabled car on the road, causing the man assisting the vehicle to sustain a partially amputated leg.
Reports from the Miami-Dade Police Department revealed that Highsmith was driving slightly above the speed limit when he hit the unlit disabled car. Despite immediate assistance from Highsmith and bystanders, the injured man suffered severe leg injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition.
Highsmith’s agent clarified that Highsmith promptly provided aid following the collision and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, nor was he driving recklessly.
The Miami Heat expressed condolences to those affected by the accident and noted that Highsmith missed a subsequent game due to personal reasons. Despite the incident, Highsmith, who has transitioned from collegiate basketball to the NBA G League before joining the Heat in 2022, is expected to resume team activities soon.
