The Washington Commanders are actively pursuing coaching changes, and the latest buzz surrounds their search for a new head coach. Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, is a leading contender. However, a notable figure, Eminem, has issued a warning against Johnson’s potential departure.
In an interview with ePro Team, Eminem jokingly cautioned Johnson about leaving the Lions, hinting at a possible diss track if he departs.
Johnson is scheduled to meet with the Commanders for an interview on Tuesday.
Additionally, the Commanders now have the opportunity to interview Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, following his team’s loss in the AFC Championship Game to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Macdonald previously engaged in virtual meetings with the Commanders earlier this month, but now he has the opportunity to conduct face-to-face interviews. With only two coaching positions remaining in the NFL, Macdonald stands a strong chance of securing the Washington job. On January 23, the Commanders announced their intention to dispatch a group to Detroit as part of their ongoing efforts to scout top coordinators across the league.
Jordan Schultz, from Bleacher Report, stated that the Commanders recently interviewed Eric Bieniemy, their offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Schultz noted that the interview involved general manager Adam Peters and owner Josh Harris, highlighting Bieniemy’s “excellent and highly detailed approach.”
In spite of a promising beginning to the season, the Commanders’ offense encountered significant challenges during the latter part of the year, culminating in a 25th ranking in points per game with 19.4. Sam Howell, in his debut season as Washington’s starting quarterback, posted 3,946 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions.
Before assuming the role of offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Washington, Bieniemy served as the Kansas City Chiefs’ OC from 2018 to 2022, playing a crucial part in the development of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes achieved two MVP awards, and the Chiefs secured two Super Bowl victories during that period.
Now, the Commanders have the opportunity to schedule their interview and aim to secure a coach capable of leading them to a championship in D.C.
