After the Washington Commanders revealed on Thursday that Dan Quinn would be their new head coach, Minnesota Vikings supporters celebrated, seeing it as a strong indication that Brian Flores would continue as the team’s defensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
But, unfortunately, that ship hasn’t officially sailed just yet.
Due to a recent addition to the Green Bay Packers’ staff, the Vikings might face the prospect of losing their current defensive coordinator to another position before the commencement of the 2024 season.
Earlier this week, news broke that Jeff Hafley is departing from his role as the head coach of Boston College to assume the position of defensive coordinator for the Packers.
Hafley’s move leaves a vacancy for the head coach position at Boston College. Consequently, the New England Football Journal has identified Flores as one of several external candidates potentially vying for the role.
The tie between Flores and Boston College is notable, given his tenure as a linebacker for the school from 1999 to 2003. Moreover, his extensive experience with the New England Patriots, serving as an assistant coach and scout from 2004 to 2018, adds to his familiarity with the area.
While Flores could be considered a contender for the Boston College opening, it remains uncertain whether he is a realistic choice. Notably, he lacks coaching experience at the collegiate level. Additionally, considering the current landscape of college football with factors like the transfer portal and NIL deals, Flores may not be inclined to pursue a career path in college coaching.
Thus, at present, it appears that Flores’s inclusion in discussions for the Boston College position may be more speculative than concrete. It is probable that he will continue as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 season. However, as football dynamics can swiftly evolve, his status with the Vikings remains subject to change.
