Samy Sayed Mekkawy Saied Morsy, born on 10th September 1991, is a professional footballer known for his role as a defensive midfielder. Currently playing for EFL Championship club Ipswich Town, where he also serves as the captain, Morsy is a key player for both his club and the Egypt national team.
Originally from Wolverhampton, England, Morsy’s football journey began with the Port Vale youth team in 2008 after being released from the Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy. Despite facing initial challenges, he quickly rose through the ranks and turned professional with Port Vale. Morsy played a pivotal role in helping the club secure promotion from League Two in the 2012–13 season.
In July 2013, Morsy moved to Chesterfield, where he contributed to the team’s success in winning the Football League Trophy in 2014 and clinching the League Two title in the 2013–14 season. His performances attracted attention, leading to a transfer to Wigan Athletic in January 2016. Morsy played a crucial role in Wigan’s promotion from League One in the 2015–16 season.
During his time at Wigan, Morsy experienced a loan spell at Barnsley in the 2016–17 season. Despite Wigan facing relegation from the Championship, Morsy played a key role in their immediate return to League One by winning the title in the 2017–18 season. He earned recognition as Wigan’s Player of the Year for the 2019–20 campaign.
In September 2020, Morsy joined Middlesbrough, where he spent one season before moving to Ipswich Town in August 2021. With Ipswich, he played a crucial part in securing promotion from League One at the end of the 2022–23 season.
Internationally, Morsy chose to represent Egypt, making his debut in August 2016. He was part of Egypt’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, making an appearance in the group stage.
