More than two days have passed since Sherrone Moore transitioned from offensive coordinator to Michigan’s 21st head football coach. However, it has been uncertain which staff members plan to stay in Ann Arbor rather than accompany Jim Harbaugh to the NFL. Yet, it seems one staff member is set to stay, likely someone Harbaugh wanted to bring along to Los Angeles.
With several departures expected from Michigan’s staff, new head coach Sherrone Moore has secured one victory within the team.
According to multiple sources, tight ends coach Grant Newsome is anticipated to be promoted to offensive line coach under Moore’s leadership. This marks the initial official confirmation of a specific position during the Moore era in Ann Arbor.
Newsome joined in 2015 as the promising left tackle for the Wolverines until a career-ending injury in early 2016 against Wisconsin. Since then, he has served as a graduate assistant and later as the tight ends coach starting from the 2022 season. Former head coach Jim Harbaugh has frequently praised Newsome, foreseeing him as a future head coach, noting his exceptional wisdom. Harbaugh once mentioned in a radio interview that transitioning Newsome to offensive line duties was the next planned step in his career trajectory.
“For Grant Newsome, he’s currently the tight ends coach, but we’re already grooming him to take over as the offensive line coach,” Harbaugh stated. “Then, after a year or two as the offensive line coach, similar to Sherrone Moore’s path, he’ll become the coordinator. Eventually, when we can’t offer him more titles or money, someone will surely snatch him up as a head coach. Remember my words, they will come true.”
For Moore, retaining Newsome signifies a significant victory, preventing Harbaugh from taking him to the Chargers and reinforcing the stability required for the program amid recent departures.
