Lady Vols Head Coach Kim Caldwell Honored with Inaugural Trailblazer Award

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – A historic moment unfolded in the heart of Tennessee basketball as Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell was presented with the inaugural Trailblazer Award, an honor recognizing her impact on women’s basketball. The award was bestowed by three legendary former Lady Vols: Candace Parker, Chamique Holdsclaw, and Tamika Catchings—icons who helped shape the program’s rich legacy.

The ceremony, held at Thompson-Boling Arena before a packed crowd, was a testament to Caldwell’s leadership, resilience, and commitment to advancing women’s basketball. The Trailblazer Award was created to recognize individuals who push boundaries, inspire future generations, and uphold the championship culture that Tennessee basketball represents.

“This is an incredible honor,” Caldwell said, visibly moved by the moment. “To receive this award from three of the greatest to ever wear the Lady Vols jersey makes it even more special. This program has always been about excellence, and I’m proud to be part of its continuing legacy.”

Since taking over as head coach, Caldwell has brought a renewed energy to the Lady Vols, emphasizing both skill development and a winning mindset. Under her leadership, Tennessee has remained a powerhouse in women’s college basketball, continuing the tradition set by legendary coach Pat Summitt.

The three former Lady Vols who presented the award are no strangers to greatness:

  • Candace Parker, a two-time NCAA champion and WNBA superstar, has been a vocal advocate for women’s sports and a trailblazer in her own right.
  • Chamique Holdsclaw, a three-time NCAA champion and former WNBA standout, remains an inspiration for athletes through her work in mental health advocacy.
  • Tamika Catchings, one of the most decorated players in women’s basketball history, is a Hall of Famer and a key figure in the growth of the game.

All three legends praised Caldwell’s leadership and dedication, emphasizing her role in shaping the next generation of Lady Vols.

“Kim embodies everything this program stands for—passion, hard work, and a commitment to excellence,” Parker said. “She’s continuing the legacy of greatness, and we couldn’t be prouder to present her with this honor.”

The Trailblazer Award presentation was met with roaring applause from the Lady Vols faithful, a fanbase known for its unwavering support. As Caldwell continues to lead Tennessee into the future, her impact on the program—and women’s basketball as a whole—is only just beginning.
