NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – It’s the end of an era. New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas will become a free agent sometime before the start of the league year, which begins on March 13.

Fox 8 Saints analyst Jeff Duncan says it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” the Saints part ways with the former offensive player of the year.

Thomas took to Twitter soon after news broke, saying the move is not a release, since he was on a one-year contract with the Saints in 2023.

Thomas was taken by the Saints in 2016 in the second round and quickly became a go-to target for Drew Brees. As a rookie, he hauled in 92 catches for 1,137 yards and nine touchdowns.

Thomas made a significant impact on the field early on in his career, earning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award in 2019.

He shattered records, setting a new NFL record with an astounding 149 receptions, totaling a league-high and franchise-record 1,725 receiving yards with nine touchdowns.

However, after signing a five-year deal worth $96 million, his Hall-of-Fame potential diminished after a series of injuries that kept him sidelined several games for multiple seasons.
