According to reports, Chelsea will name Todd Boehly’s successor as chairman in 2027. Since joining the Blues, the American co-owner has had difficulty gaining the loyalty of the team’s supporters, and things seem to be getting worse for him at Stamford Bridge.
The Daily Mail claims that an arrangement has been reached whereby the club’s co-owners will alternate as chairman every five years. When Boehly is replaced as chairman at the conclusion of the 2026–2027 season, the “extraordinary” plan is scheduled to be implemented.
Despite holding a minority ownership in the club, the co-owners believe the 50-year-old was offered the chance to have “gone first.” Boehly shares an equal 38.5 percent ownership stake in the Blues with Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss.
Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, owns the remaining 61.5 percent. Whether the private equity company chooses to succeed Boehly as chairman in 2027 is still up in the air.
The initial terms of the club’s acquisition in 2022, when the new ownership took over, are rumored to have included an obligation on the part of the American owners group to cover any “first losses in the event of a realisation or a sale.” This is reported to have led to the first appointment in the position.
When Boehly’s chairman position becomes available, it will be interesting to watch if Eghbali or Feliciano choose to assume it themselves or if they choose to bring in a new set of eyes and designate a “third-party” to assume leadership for a five-year period. Although it is emphasized that there will be a new chairman at that time, a decision on the topic has not yet been made.
Additionally, Boehly could reclaim the position in 2032 if he so chooses, or his first term as chairman might lead his group to search elsewhere for a qualified replacement. Despite spending enormous sums of money on signings, the Chelsea team’s performance has left much to be desired, and the investor has come under heavy fire since taking over the team.
