Ohio State football faced a challenging offensive season in 2023, falling short of Coach Ryan Day’s expectations. In response, significant changes were made in the offseason to address these issues.
One notable change was bringing in Bill O’Brien as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to provide additional expertise in play calling. Quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis was reassigned to an undisclosed role as part of this adjustment.
The Buckeyes also took an aggressive approach to enhance their roster through the transfer portal, securing players like Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, Ole Miss transfer Quinshon Judkins, and Alabama center Seth McLaughlin. While there are still areas to address, such as the tackle position and the replacement for star wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., the overall offensive lineup appears to have seen significant upgrades in key positions.
Here’s an early projection for the Ohio State offense in 2024:
Quarterback:
- Will Howard
- Key reserves: Devin Brown, Julian Sayin, Air Noland, Lincoln Kienholz
The starting quarterback position for 2024 seems to be Howard’s to lose, given his experience at Kansas State. The battle for the No. 2 spot is expected to be competitive, involving Brown, Kienholz, Sayin, and Noland. Potential transfers after spring practice might occur, reflecting the Buckeyes’ need for increased competition.
Running back:
- TreVeyon Henderson, Quinshon Judkins
- Key reserve: Dallan Hayden
Henderson and Judkins are anticipated to form a potent running back duo, boasting a combined 5,470 yards and 63 touchdowns in their careers. Hayden, although currently the third option, remains a crucial part of Ohio State’s future. Freshman James Peoples is likely to be the backup behind Hayden.
Wide receiver:
- Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss
- Key reserves: Jeremiah Smith, Jayden Ballard
The starting trio of receivers is projected to be Egbuka, Tate, and Inniss, with Smith potentially joining the mix as he adjusts to college. The depth at the position, including Ballard and potential returnee Bryson Rodgers, adds versatility. Five-star freshman Mylan Graham is expected to join later in the summer.
Tight end:

- Key reserves: Will Kacmarek, Jelani Thurman
Scott is considered the starting tight end, having played the second-most snaps in the position last season. The addition of Ohio transfer Kacmarek adds depth, and Thurman, with his size and potential, could be a significant threat in the passing game.
Offensive line:
- Josh Simmons, Donovan Jackson, Seth McLaughlin, Josh Fryar, Luke Montgomery
- Key reserves: Tegra Tshabola, Carson Hinzman, Enokk Vimahi
The offensive line presents a controversial group, with the left side seemingly set with Simmons and Jackson. McLaughlin addresses the center position, but the right side remains undecided. Fryar might work at guard and tackle, but the preferred setup could be Fryar at right guard and Montgomery at tackle unless another option arises in the spring transfer window.
