After parting with Alex Van Pelt approximately ten days ago, the Browns have appointed a former quarterback for the franchise as their new offensive coordinator.
The Browns addressed the initial significant query of their offseason this Sunday. Approximately 11 days following the departure of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and several other offensive assistants, Cleveland has named a new OC, appointing former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey for the position, as per multiple reports. Dorsey served as Buffalo’s signal caller for the last two seasons but was dismissed midseason when the team’s record dropped to 5-5.
Dorsey has familiarity with Cleveland, having served as a quarterback for the Browns from 2006 to 2008. Throughout his tenure, he only started three games, completing 43 out of 92 passes for 370 yards with seven interceptions. Notably, he did not score a touchdown while playing for the Browns.
Following his retirement from football in 2011, Dorsey promptly reentered the NFL scene as a Pro Scout, aligning with the Carolina Panthers under the leadership of first-year head coach Ron Rivera. By 2013, he transitioned into coaching, specifically as a quarterback coach. During the subsequent five seasons, Dorsey collaborated closely with Cam Newton, who eventually earned the league MVP title in 2015. Notably, that year, the Carolina Panthers advanced to the Super Bowl.
After a brief stint at FIU as an assistant Athletic Director in 2018, the University of Miami alum swiftly made his way back to the NFL scene. In 2019, he became part of Sean McDermott’s coaching staff as the quarterbacks coach. His role expanded in 2021 when he assumed the position of pass game coordinator. Following the departure of Brian Daboll, who currently leads the Giants, Dorsey was elevated to the position of offensive coordinator in the same year.
Dorsey occupied that position until Week 10 of the recent season. McDermott chose to change course after Buffalo experienced a downturn, losing four out of seven games in the middle of the season. Dorsey’s offense achieved impressive statistics in 2023, ranking highly in various metrics including DVOA, EPA/Play, QBR, Yards Per Play, Third Down conversion percentage, and red zone efficiency.
The offense faced scrutiny for its limited creativity, heavily leaning on quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs for effective plays. Following Dorsey’s exit, Buffalo’s rushing game notably improved, propelling the Bills to victory in six consecutive matches to close out the season and clinch the AFC North title.
