Sherrone Moore will take over as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines as the NCAA team and national champions deal with the aftermath of Jim Harbaugh’s abrupt departure to the Los Angeles Chargers on January 24 in search of better opportunities in the NFL.
It brings an end to the account of what the team did in an attempt to replace the gifted coach who led them to a 15-0 record in the championship season and was awarded 12 victories.
The victories included defeating Iowa in the Big Ten Championship, defeating Alabama 27-20 in the Rose Bowl, and defeating the Washington Huskies 34-13 in the CFB National Championship game on January 8.
In response, they promoted Adam Schefter of ESPN, who has previous head coaching experience, to the position of offensive coordinator/offensive line coach for Moore. In 2023, Moore filled in for Harbaugh for four games while he was suspended; he won all four, demonstrating some promise.
Moore’s contract is for five years, with a basic salary of $500,000 per season. In his first year, Moore will receive $5 million in compensation. If he stays in leadership, his pay should rise by 2% year, and he may receive bonuses of an additional $3.5 million.
In the Wolverines’ history, he becomes the first black head coach of football to maintain a permanent post.
“I have been preparing my entire coaching career for this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place to be head coach than at the University of Michigan,” Moore stated in a statement. “As a TEAM, we will exert every effort every day to carry on the 144-year tradition of championship football played at Michigan.
“Our expectations won’t alter. We intend to be a championship-caliber football team that is intelligent, resilient, tenacious, passionate, and plays with a love for the game, the winged helmet, and one another.”
