LCFC took the lead at Broadfield Stadium thanks to goals from Lena Petermann and Jutta Rantala, but Elisabeth Terland’s two goals ensured that the points were shared in a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
Before halftime, Petermann scored a long-range goal with her left foot. Rantala then doubled Leicester’s lead right away. However, Brighton pulled off a late comeback when Terland scored her sixth and seventh goals of the year to tie the Barclays Women’s Super League match.
Josie Green replaced Courtney Nevin in Willie Kirk’s lone alteration to the team that Chelsea had defeated 5-2 prior to the recent international break. The Australian full-back was brought on just 12 minutes later after CJ Bott was forced off due to injury.
Early on, both teams struggled to adapt to the unfavorable weather, but City created the first real opportunity of the match when Janice Cayman crossed the ball into Petermann’s path. However, her header went narrowly wide of the near post.
Brighton quickly took the lead, but Janina Leitzig was able to block every shot that was aimed towards goal, and the Foxes created the next opening. Leicester committed a lot of players to winning the ball high up the pitch, which gave Rantala the opportunity to find Nevin. The defender’s attempt was deflected behind for a corner, but it was not very helpful.
German forward Petermann broke the deadlock just before halftime, putting her third goal of the season past Sophie Baggaley with a lovely left-footed strike that found the top corner.
Following the break, the Foxes doubled their lead in just 20 seconds thanks to Rantala’s goal. The ball found Sam Tierney after some good build-up play by Petermann and Nevin. Tierney did well to identify the Finnish international inside the box and curl an effort onto the postage stamp.
Leicester steadied the ship for the next thirty minutes. Brighton attempted to fight their way back into the game after falling behind by two goals, but the visiting team’s physical challenges and ingenious fouls kept the game under control at first. But this was not going to last the entire ninety minutes.
